Red Lodge, Montana is an exciting mountain town that is popular year round.
Tourists are attracted to its rich historical character, its proximity to
Yellowstone, and its abundance of outdoor recreational activities. Red Lodge is
also a gateway to the Beartooth Scenic Highway.
The history of Red Lodge is much like that of other surrounding mountain towns:
Indians, settlers, ranchers, and miners. The town is named after the Crow
Indian's tradition of decorating their teepees with red clay that was collected
in the nearby hills. The discovery of coal in the area attracted many settlers
from all over the world. When the coal boom started to bust, Congress allowed
for the building of the Beartooth Scenic Highway to attract tourists the the
beautiful mountain environment. Today, many buildings in Red Lodge are listed on
the National Register for Historic Places, including the old Carbon County Bank
Building which was robbed by the Sundance Kid in 1887.
The winters attract skiers to Red Lodge Mountain Ski Area which is located 6
miles into the Beartooth Mountains. The mountain boasts 60 trails and groomed
slopes, 30 acres of chute skiing, and 60 acres of tree skiing. There are two
high-speed detachable quad chair lifts, one triple, and four doubles. Enjoy a
vertical drop of 2,350 feet with a base elevation of 7,100 feet and a top
elevation of 9,416 feet. The longest run is 2.5 miles long and over half of the
mountain is rated for intermediate skiers.
The springs and summers attract campers, hikers, and bikers. The summer is the
busiest time of the year with many tourists passing through to Yellowstone. Many
visitors come via the Beartooth Scenic Highway (US 212), a breathtaking 65-mile
mountain drive to Cooke City, Montana. The fall is much more quiet making for
excellent hunting.
The Festival of Nations celebrates the different cultures who have gathered in
Red Lodge and is one of the town's most popular annual festivals. Other seasonal
attractions include rodeos, music festivals, and a mountain man rendezvous.
There is also a self-guided historic walking tour as well as many novelty shops.
The Carbon County Arts Guild holds exhibits in Red Lodge's original railroad
depot and features different local artists. If you are traveling with children,
you might want to check out the Beartooth Nature Center which allows your kids
to see mountain lions, wolves, and bears up close. This is not a zoo, the nature
center is home to animals who are orphaned or injured and are unable to survive
in the wild.
Red Lodge is accessible by MT 78 and US Hwy 212.
