The Cody Country is a grand location for all those "blue ribbon trout streams" that are featured in outdoor magazines everywhere. West and southwest of Cody are the north and south forks of the Shoshone River with innumerable tributaries rushing into each one. The Clark's Fork of the Yellowstone River is northwest of Cody in the Sunlight Basin area. Buffalo Bill Reservoir, Newton Lakes, Sunshine Reservoir--as well as other small lakes and reservoirs--are also available.
Who owns some of America's finest streams and lakes? YOU do!! Welcome to the Shoshone National Forest. The Shoshone National Forest comprises about 2.5 million acres with about half in wilderness. We have about 2,500 miles of perennial streams. We estimate that roughly two-thirds or about 1,700 miles of those perennial streams support some type of trout fishery. We currently have about 500 lakes that support trout naturally or through periodic stocking.
