Overview

Fly-fishing is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure around Cody, Wyoming, with large trout (up to 20 inches or more at some locations), blue-ribbon trout streams, beautiful scenery and the peacefulness in the gentle forested terrain.

Where to go fly-fishing

There is a wide choice of fishing locations around Cody. The Shoshone River is a favorite, the north and south fork of the river offering up a number of willing fish. The Greybull is also a popular dry fly fishing spot.

On the Bighorn River, you’ll find the canyon area offers the best places for marvelous rainbows and cutthroats. The Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone is surrounded by mountainous terrain and has 15 miles of free stone stream with plenty of pocket water.

The lakes boast some large trout too. Newton Lake and Luce Lake are just a short distance from Cody, with trout averaging 13 to 15 inches. Buffalo Bill, Hogan and Sunshine Reservoirs are good spots to try your hand at catching some wild trout.

Fees

You will be required to get a fishing license in Wyoming to legally fish in the state. For non-residents, the daily cost is $14, and $6 for residents of Wyoming.

Safety Precautions

Remember a few safety tips when going fly-fishing:

  • If you use a boat or tube, be sure all passengers (and you) wear life jackets.
  • Do not fish in areas where it is prohibited. Rules are there for a purpose.
  • Always have safety items available, such as flashlights, water, maps and a phone or radio.
  • Keep your fishing knives sharp, and keep the blade covered when not in use.
