Greybull Wood Fishing

Greybull River / Wood River
(Greybull Ranger District)

Species Present:
Greybull River: Yellowstone cutthroat, Mountain Whitefish, and the occasional Brown Trout. Wood River: Yellowstone Cutthroat, Mountain Whitefish, and Brook Trout.

Seasons:
Fishing is allowed year round but the area receives substantial amounts of snow from late fall to mid spring. Ice out on the main forks of the river is usually around the 1st of May. Spring runoff usually runs until the end of June.

Access:
The headwaters of the Wood and Greybull Rivers begin in the Absaroka Mountain Range in Northwest Wyoming. Both rivers are accessed by driving west out of Meeteetse on State Highway 290. Approximately 10 miles down this road, take Forest Road 200 to access the upper reaches of the Wood River. This road parallels the Wood River most of its distance. To reach the upper end of the Greybull River, continue west on State Highway 290. The road turns to dirt and into Forest Road 208 at the same place. Continue on this road until you reach the Jack Creek Trailhead. The lower elevations of these two rivers are predominately private and access to the upper reaches are primarily by foot and horseback.

Camping:
Two developed campgrounds are located on the Wood River, Brown Mountain (6 units) and Wood River (5 units). Jack Creek Campground (7 units) is located on the Greybull River. Dispersed camping is allowed.

Comments: br> The access to the upper reaches of the Greybull River is by foot or horseback. Access to the upper reaches of the Wood River is by four wheel drive only. As a result fishing pressure is low and good fishing for Yellowstone cutthroat can be had on both rivers within the Shoshone National Forest. Both river's fisheries are maintained by natural reproduction (managed as wild fisheries). State wide creel limits apply and all legal methods of fishing are allowed.
