Billings, Montana is known to its inhabitants as the "Magic City" and when you visit you are sure to find out why. Billings is full of culture, home to the University of Montana, surrounded by four mountain ranges, and relatively close to Yellowstone, Glacier, and Grand Teton National Parks. Billings is the heart of the Wild West and many who live there now used to use horse and stagecoach for transportation. When the railroad first arrived in Billings, business began to flourish. Since then its economy has been based on energy, agriculture, transportation, and more recently, tourism. Today visitors from everywhere enjoy her proximity to so many recreation opportunities, out-of-doors wonders, and history.
Exploring downtown Billings may take longer than you expect. The Yellowstone Art Museum has an impressive art collection, not to mention it's located in the place of the old Yellowstone County Jail. The Yellowstone Western Heritage Museum is an information filled and interesting stop. A skate park is a frequent spot for energetic skaters. Metrapark is a large venue usually booked with concerts and rodeos. And like most cities, you'll have many opportunities to see live music, art displays, and theatrical performances.
You can begin enjoying the outdoors even within the city limits of Billings, Montana. Riverfront Park is on South Billings Boulevard and is a great area for picnics, afternoon strolls, and an occasional nap. There is a golf course and a few reservoirs which invite fishermen and all types of water sport enthusiasts. The sandstone Rimrocks which encircle Billings can be visited via the Black Otter Trail named after a Crow Indian Chief. Pictograph Cave State Park sits just outside of Billings and has preserved pictographs from before the Crow Indians inhabited the area.
The Bighorns, Beartooths, Crazy Mountains, Pryor Range, and the Snowy Mountains are all ranges that surround Billings, Montana. Hikers and backpackers will have a hard time deciding which one of these ranges to explore. Rockcreek, Boulder, Stillwater, Yellowstone Rivers are all well known fishing locations. Billings and its surrounding areas in Montana lure downhill and cross-country skiers, kayakers, windsurfers, hunters, and bikers.
Billings Logan International Airport is the regional hub for United. Delta and Northwest also provide frequent flights to and from major cities like Minneapolis, Denver, SLC, Spokane, and Seattle. Hwy 212 and 87 pass directly through town and I-90 and I-94 are the closest major interstates. Once in Billings, MT the MET transit system is a city bus that makes it easy to get around town. Cody, WY is 170 miles south of Billings on Hwy 120.
