Buffalo, Wyoming rests in a beautiful land between the Black Hills and
Yellowstone National Park where I-90 and I-25 meet. It is home to the Bozeman
Trail, many battle sites between Indians and the U.S. government like Fetterman
Monument and Wagon Box, gold rush sites, cowboys, the gateway to the Bighorn
Mountains, and plenty of history.
Between 1864 and 1866, 3500 emigrants in search of gold traveled along the
Bozeman Trail through Powder River Basin where northern plains Indians like the
Cheyenne and Lakota both lived and hunted. As migrants began to arrive in
Buffalo they were constantly under attack from these tribes. This helped
initiate the Indian Wars with the government and the building of various forts,
still standing today, to protect these new comers. The area surrounding Buffalo,
Wyoming is known as Hole-in-the-Wall country, where rock buttes were just the
right height and width to hide Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Buffalo's museums, theatres, antique shops, many historic buildings, walking
tours, trail systems, numerous scenic roads, and golfing opportunities may seem
to be enough to fill your days. But once you see how much surrounds Buffalo, you
may decide to spend more time in places like the Bighorn National Forest and the
Petrified Tree Forest. Clear Creek Trail runs right through town and provides
runners, hikers, or strollers a beautiful and accessible place to spend an
afternoon. Crazy Woman Canyon can be accessed by driving up a dirt road along a
winding stream to find views of the Bighorns and colorful hillsides as leaves
start to change colors in the fall. It is common to find anglers along the banks
of the middle fork of the Powder River, on various streams in the Cloud Peak
Wilderness and on Lake DeSmet, which also welcomes many other water sports.
Horseback riding, backpacking, and biking are common activities in all of these
areas. Hunting elk, mule deer, white-tail deer, black bear, mountain lion, and
antelope is an option as well when the season is right. In the winter there are
great opportunities for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowshoeing,
snowmobiling, ice fishing, and ice skating.
Ranching is a common lifestyle in the Buffalo area. Rodeos are sometimes a way
for these skilled equestrians to show off their skills and for families to enjoy
an evening. Rodeos are scheduled every Wednesday evening from June through
August. In August don't miss the Johnson County Fair and Rodeo.
The Cloud Peak Scenic Skyway skims 45 miles above and through the Bighorns and
departs directly from Buffalo to reach Yellowstone. This road not only offers
breathtaking views, but it is the most direct route to Cody, Wyoming and
eventually Yellowstone National Park.
