Cody's
Winter Wildlife
Because the Absaroka Mountains are situated on the east side of the continental divide, warm chinook winds keep most of the lower reaches free from snow much of the winter. Wildlife discovered the secret of winter in the Absarokas a millennium ago as snow in the high country forced large herds of deer, elk, buffalo and bighorn sheep to the open meadows for forage. Many trophy class big game animals can be easily viewed from the comfort of your car. Mornings and evenings are best for observing the wildlife from anyone of three routes leading from Cody
- The South Fork road, Hwy 291; the Buffalo Bill Cody Scenic Byway, U.S. 14, 16, 20; or the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, WY 296.
In Yellowstone wildlife is abundant. Huge bison use their massive heads as snowplows to clear the grass sealed beneath the snow cover. Elk forage in the windswept meadows or graze on the grass that is perennially green in the warmth of nearby hot springs and pools. Yellowstone awaits the winter adventurer with a treasure of special sights and
experiences.
