THE CODY NITE RODEO - A PART OF WYOMING HISTORY

The Cody Nite Rodeo is produced by Ivory Rodeo Company of Cody, Wyoming. Jim and Cathy Ivory are a part of rodeo history. The third generation of a rodeo family, Jim Ivory has been involved with every aspect of the business.

Jim started his career in rodeo at a young age. He qualified in the bareback riding for the National Finals Rodeo four times and was runner-up for the World Title in 1969. He has competed and helped produce rodeo in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Cathy Ivory is also the third generation of a rodeo family. She competed on the University of Wyoming rodeo team, and also in Europe. She was Miss Rodeo at University of Wyoming.

THE LIFE OF A RODEO COWBOY

One of the most glamorized lifestyles has been that of the professional cowboy. It is true that life is seldom dull for the cowboys, as the demands of getting from one rodeo to another are tremendously arduous.

The Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit has a "Buddy System", where two cowboys may enter rodeo for the same performance. In this way they can share the driving chores, and split expenses for a private plane.

It is well nigh impossible to rodeo solo. Today, a professional cowboy's life is very much dependent on his travel companions. Entire lives become entwined by sharing clothes, money, hotel rooms, and a great deal of intimacy and soul searching.

Pro rodeo is a young man's sport, and a young man grows up very quickly when he is traveling the circuit. The pressure of being on the road takes a heavy toll on new young talent; many cannot stand the strain.

Five-time PRCA world champion in bareback riding, Joe Alexander, describes it thus: "There are a lot of cowboys that can rope and ride, but there is a much smaller percentage who can stand the pace and still win. That's one of the real tests of a cowboy. You will find out how tough he is real fast when he has to get out and go to rodeos. It's the original school of hard knocks!"

From the moment a rider leads the grand entry parade into the rodeo arena until the moment that same arena becomes a yawning oval of empty planks and seats, rodeo bears the mark of the last frontier.

The men who follow the sport know its hardships and comforts. They grow old and wise, and know that in the sport of rodeo they have achieved a satisfaction that only a few earn in life.
