Snowmobiling
Snowmobilers will find endless opportunities for deep powder sledding and hill climbing in the expansive and rugged mountain play areas of the Beartooth Plateau and the Cooke City/Silver Gate area. In addition to this spectacularly scenic play area, the Cody County Snowmobile Association maintains about 70 miles of groomed and ungroomed trails, a warming hut, and rest rooms. Cooke City has a nearly 100 mile groomed and ungroomed snowmobile trail system that connects with the Beartooth trail system. All of this is easily accessed via the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway, WY 296. Snowmobiles can be rented, purchased, maintained and repaired in Cody and Powell, Wyoming.
Snowmobiling in the Shoshone National Forest
Over 300 miles of scenic groomed and ungroomed trails plus thousands of acres of off trail riding awaits snowmobile enthusiasts on the Shoshone National Forest. Generally the best riding season is from early December through late April. The Beartooth Mountains on the northern half of our forest boasts 32 miles of groomed and 34 miles of ungroomed trails. Access to Yellowstone Park via snowmobile is also found on the northern half, 50 miles west of Cody on the Buffalo Bill Scenic Byway. The southern half of our forest contains Continental Divide Trails with the Dubois area enjoying 150 miles and the Lander area 95 miles of trail.
Beartooth Mountains/Northwest Wyoming
Thirty-two miles of groomed trails and 34 miles of ungroomed trails. The grooming season runs through December through March but excellent spring riding continues through May. Spectacular scenery highlight the link between Cooke City/Silver Gate and Red Lodge, Montana. Three to ten feet of packed powder remains through the season. Complete facilities and services are available in Cody and Powell, WY and in Cooke City, MT. Rentals are available in Cody and Cooke City. Snowmobile registrations and nonresident user fees are available in this area. In addition there are two parking areas for your convenience

Season temperatures: +30 Degrees to -30 Degrees
Visitors should note that vehicle access to Cooke City and Silver Gate, MT is closed on US Hwy 212, east of Cooke City in winter. Snowmobile access is from Chief Joseph Scenic Highway (WY 296), at the Pilot Creek parking lot. It is approximately nine miles into Cooke City. From the west and north, visitors can drive through the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park from Gardiner, MT and head east to Cooke City.
Registrations and Nonresident User Fees
Resident registrations and nonresident snowmobile user fees are required by Wyoming State Law. These annual fee revenues are used by the Snowmobile Trails Fund for trail grooming and maintenance. Proof of payment is in the form of a decal which must be displayed on the exterior of the snow machine. Resident and nonresident decals are available from licensed permit selling agents across the state, Wyoming State Parks & Historic Sites headquarters and local snowmobile clubs. Nonresidents may order decals by calling , 307-777-6560. Decals are $15.00. A set of four snowmobile trail maps are included with each decal ordered. Major credit cards accepted.
