Bighorn Sheep are famed for their narrow muzzles, pointed ears and huge curling horns in the older males (rams). Members of the genus Ovis in the Bovidae they generally inhabit dry upland areas. Bighorns in the Rocky Mountains are usually quite large, with males occasionally exceeding 500lb.

Interesting Fact

The Bighorn Sheep crossed the Bering Land Bridge from Siberia; the population in North America peaked in the millions and the Bighorn Sheep entered into the mythology of Native Americans.

Best Place for Viewing

Many Bighorn Sheep can be found in the Rocky Mountains and tend to be found at high terrains to which they instinctively flock.

Respecting Wildlife

Human activities are responsible for the Bighorn's decline, with the excessive poaching during the 1960s and early 1970's pushing the species towards extinction. Visitors are asked to respect the Bighorn Sheep and their habitat to preserve those that are remaining.
