Buffalo / Bison

The Bison falls into two distinct species, the European species called the Wisent and the commonly, yet incorrectly, named Buffalo is the American Bison which was the principal resource of the Plains Native Americans.

  • American Bison have reduced in numbers hugely and are now best spotted in National Parks and nature reserves.
  • Yellowstone National Park has a large number of Bison and is a good place to view them.
  • Bison usually reside on plains, prairies and river valleys and are most likely to be spotted there.

Overview

Two species of Bison exist and are known as the Wisent (European breed) and the American Bison which is commonly, although incorrectly ,known as the Buffalo. A large American Bison can weigh as much as 99kg and are characterised by horns and long hair around the head and forequarters.

Interesting Facts

Like people, the buffalo, known to scientists as bison, came to North American long ago from Asia, crossing a land bridge that once connected Siberia to Alaska.

Best Place For Viewing

The American bison live on plains, prairies and river valleys. Sadly, bison are ecologically extinct throughout most of their historical range so the best chance to see an American bison is in National Parks and other small wildlife areas. Yellowstone National Park has the largest population of free-roaming plains bison (4,000) in America.

Respecting Wildlife

Bison numbers have fallen rapidly since the time when the white settlers first arrived although they are now slowly increasing. We ask you to respect this endangered species and never approach them or damage their habitat.
