Eagles

Eagles are large predatory birds that have long been symbols of power, courage and immortality, eagles inhabit most major land regions but some types, including the American bald eagle, are becoming increasingly rare.

Overview

There are more than 50 species of eagle found throughout the world. In Wyoming, there are two types of eagle that are known to live within Yellowstone Park: the Golden Eagle and the Bald Eagle, which is the national emblem of the United States.

Interesting Facts

Eagles have very keen eye-sight and identify their prey while soaring high in the air and then sweeping down at great speed. Their speed and wing span of up to six feet make them effective and impressive hunters.

Where to view

Bald Eagles are frequently seen along the rivers in Yellowstone. Early morning along the Madison and just south of Canyon along the Yellowstone River are great places to watch for eagles.

Respecting Wildlife

Many species of eagle, including the Bald Eagle, are endangered. It is therefore imperative that bird, chicks and eggs are left in peace and that their habitats are preserved.
