Moose

The moose (Alces alces) is the largest extant species in the deer family and can be found across Northern America from Alaska to Eastern Canada and in the Northwestern US.

  • Moose can be found in Canada and Northern parts of America. Wyoming is the third most populous states just after Alaska and Maine.
  • Moose are most likely to be spotted in sparsely wooded areas of mixed trees and near lakes and rivers.
  • They are most active, and easiest to spot, during dusk and dawn.

Overview

The Moose, found in Northern America, is the species Alces acles americiano and differs from the European Moose, often known as the elk. The animals can be found across Eastern Canada and Northeastern US and more isolated populations found as far South as the mountains of Utah and Colorado.

Interesting facts

The antlers of a mature male moose have a span of between 4-5 feet. They sometimes use the antlers for fighting competing males during the mating season. Moose are generally solitary animals, however, there is a strong line between mothers and calves.

Best Place for Viewing

Moose are most commonly found in mountainous areas across Northern America. They are most active during dusk and dawn.

Respecting Wildlife

Moose can be aggressive and will charge when threatened. Be wary if you come across a cow and calf as cows can become agressively defensive to protect their young. Take care on mountain roads as accidents involving moose are quite common and can be lethal.
